#accessABILITIES- Home Automation Program

Technology is everywhere – it’s all around us, but it’s not the same for everyone. For most of us, technology provides convenience or makes our lives more interesting. But, for children, youth, and adults living with disabilities who often face significant barriers and challenges in the world, technology is more than that – its essential to everyday life.  For individuals living with a disability, technology is truly a life-changer.

Assistive technology and specialized equipment provides a means to move, communicate, to experience the world and to access life. For those living with disabilities, technology can turn a world of limitation into a world of possibility.

Home automation for healthcare can range from very simple alerts to lavish computer controlled network interfaces. The Easter Seals Alberta Home Automation program precisely matches with individual client needs that can control everything from a light switch, heater, and television to operating a door unlock and opening system with camera capabilities.  It works in an easy to operate system that can operate from a smart phone with just a touch of a button!

Home automation will not only make those living with a disability more independent, but will also greatly increase their safety. We are running a Pilot Project for 2017, to install home automation components for two clients in Alberta; one in Calgary and one in Edmonton. Applications to apply for this program are due September 30, 2018.

Did You Know Part 2

15% of the world identifies as having a disability According to the World Health Organization, 15% of the world’s population (an estimated 1.1 billion people) identify as having some form of disability. This represents the world’s largest minority, and the only minority group that any of us can become a member of at any time.
