Balancing health, athletics, and a bright future.
My name is McKinley and I am honoured to be a recipient of a Phyllis Davidson Easter Seals Scholarship. I would like to sincerely thank Easter Seals Alberta and the generous donors who made this scholarship possible.
Throughout my life, I have lived with multiple chronic health conditions that have shaped who I am today. Navigating medical appointments, treatments, and the challenges that come with disability has required perseverance from a young age. Although the journey has not always been easy, it has taught me resilience, strengthened my determination and shaped the person I am today.
I am now entering my third year at the University of Alberta, where I am completing a Bachelor of Kinesiology with a major in Sport Performance. Alongside my studies, I compete as a member of the University of Alberta Pandas Women’s Basketball Team.
My experiences as both a patient and an athlete have shaped the path I want to take in healthcare. Along with my work in a medical clinic and my volunteer experience at Alberta Children’s Hospital, these experiences have deepened my passion for helping others feel supported, understood, and cared for as they navigate their own challenges and healing journeys.
Because of my training schedule, classes, and travel commitments, working during the academic year is not realistic. In addition, my allergies and food intolerances mean I must follow a strict gluten-free and dairy-free diet, which can be quite expensive. This scholarship has helped me afford the food and nutrition I need to stay healthy, fuel my body properly, and perform at my best both academically and athletically.
This past year, I earned a 3.50 GPA and was recognized as a U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian. I was also proud to be part of a Pandas Women’s Basketball Team that ranked among the top teams in the country. Being part of this team has taught me the importance of discipline, resilience, teamwork, and working together toward a shared goal.
“Receiving an Easter Seals Alberta Scholarship has made balancing university, athletics, and my health more manageable.”
Your generosity has made a meaningful difference in my University experience. It has reduced financial stress, supported my health, and allowed me to dedicate more time and energy to my studies and basketball. Scholarships like this create opportunities for students with disabilities and health challenges to continue pursuing their goals. They also remind recipients that there is a community of people who believe in their potential and wants them to succeed.
For me, this letter is the opportunity to say thank you. The generosity of supporters like you has encouraged me to continue pursuing my education and my goal of becoming a healthcare professional. I hope that one day I can give back by supporting others in the same way you have supported me.
Thank you again for investing in my future and in the future lives of so many others. Your generosity is creating opportunities that will continue to make a difference for years to come.
Sincerely,
McKinley
