Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education

Outdoor education is more than a field trip … it’s a transformational learning experience that builds confidence, resilience, leadership, and connection. At Camp Horizon, we bring that learning to life in an inclusive, accessible setting designed so every child and youth can thrive.

The Value of Outdoor Education

Learning That Comes to Life

Outdoor education turns theory into experience. Science is explored through ecosystems and wildlife observation. Teamwork is learned through challenge courses and cooperative games. Leadership is practiced around the campfire. When young people learn by doing, lessons stick.

Building Confidence & Independence

Time in nature encourages young people to try new things, take healthy risks, and discover what they are capable of. Whether it’s climbing, canoeing, or navigating a trail, each achievement builds self-esteem and independence.

Social & Emotional Growth

Outdoor education fosters empathy, communication, and collaboration. Shared challenges create lasting friendships and a strong sense of belonging — critical components of mental wellness and healthy development.

Connection to Nature & Community

Spending time outdoors cultivates environmental stewardship and appreciation for the natural world. It also strengthens community bonds, as participants learn to support one another and celebrate differences.

Whole-Person Development

Research consistently shows that experiential outdoor learning enhances problem-solving skills, emotional regulation, physical health, and academic engagement. It supports the development of resilient, adaptable young people prepared for life beyond the classroom.

Outdoor Education at Camp Horizon

At Camp Horizon, outdoor education is inclusive by design. As part of the work of Easter Seals Alberta, Camp Horizon has been providing barrier-free camp experiences for children and youth with disabilities and medical conditions for decades.

Located in the foothills near Bragg Creek, Camp Horizon offers a fully accessible outdoor environment where all participants can safely explore, learn, and grow.
