At Closer to Home, we know that strong, stable homes and relationships are critical to people’s success and wellbeing. That’s why preserving and reunifying families is at the heart of everything we do. It’s also why we strive to offer our programs and services in a home or a home-like environment. After all, home is where people feel a sense of connection, where lasting habits are best formed, and where real change often begins. Whether biological or chosen, it’s the relationships—the deep bonds—that make people feel at home. These bonds are critical to helping young people (and adults) feel supported on their journey of growth. We build resilient families and communities by giving children, youth, parents and caregivers the tools, training and support needed to learn, heal and grow stronger together. North Central Family Resource Network (FRN) Closer to Home’s North Central Family Resource Network (FRN) builds family resiliency with programs and services for children, youth and families in north central Calgary communities. The North Central Family Resource Network serves communities north of 16th Ave and west of Deerfoot Trail to Crowchild Trail. Ee-Des-Spoom-Ooh-Soop (Indigenous Healing Program) Ee-Des-Spoom-Ooh-Soop, which means ‘the environment that gives the opportunity to guide our lives forward in a positive direction’ in the Blackfoot language, is a culturally-based Indigenous healing program for Indigenous parents and families. This name was gifted to CTH by Siksikaitsitapi Elder Leonard Bastien and Grant Little Mustache. Ee-Des-Spoom-Ooh-Soop’s goal is to increase the involvement of Indigenous people in their individual and collective healing journey by providing an opportunity to gain knowledge, understanding and resources so that this journey becomes a self-perpetuating cycle of healing, wellness and cultural renewal at an individual and at a community level.

INDIGROW Psychology values brain based approaches to healing trauma in order to create meaningful, sustainable, and lasting change. We specialize in trauma-informed therapy, where psychological symptoms are viewed and treated as a natural response to unhealed trauma. At INDIGROW, traumatic experiences are defined as any life event or circumstance that exceeded a person’s ability to cope with what happened. Trauma can be defined as the resulting emotional, physical, or behavioural manifestation of the traumatic experience. These experiences change neural connections in our brain and this impacts our relationship with ourselves, others, and how we create meaning in the world. We are able to heal past traumatic events and alleviate psychological symptoms, unhealthy relationship dynamics, and dysfunctional behavioural patterns through a variety of attachment based approaches and techniques including EMDR, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Art and Play Therapy. We offer therapy for individuals, couples, children, youth, and families, and have extensive experience supporting clients of all developmental levels, including those with developmental disabilities. We tailor each session to meet the individual needs of our clients. Our highly-trained team comes from a variety of backgrounds; we have an appreciation for cultural diversity, and a deep understanding of how culture can impact a person’s identity. The RDSP is a tax-deferred savings account available to individuals who qualify for the Disability Tax Credit. Contributions are not tax-deductible, but the investment growth inside the plan is not taxed until withdrawn. A key feature is government support: The Canada Disability Savings Grant (CDSG) matches contributions (up to certain limits depending on income). The Canada Disability Savings Bond (CDSB) provides funds even if no personal contributions are made (for lower-income individuals). Purpose The RDSP is designed to: Encourage long-term savings Provide financial stability for people with disabilities Supplement income in adulthood, especially for future care and living expenses Key features Contributions allowed until age 59 Government contributions can total up to $90,000 over a lifetime Funds grow tax-sheltered until withdrawal Withdrawals are typically taxed in the hands of the beneficiary (often at a low rate) Bottom line The RDSP is one of Canada’s most powerful—but underused—financial tools for people with disabilities, combining personal savings with significant government incentives to support long-term financial well-being.

FACE (Families of Alberta for Conductive Education) is dedicated to supporting children and young adults with moderate to severe neuromotor conditions impacting daily activities. It employs Conductive Education (CE), a holistic method blending physical rehab with cognitive learning in group settings to build independence via problem-solving and task-oriented activities. Young Adult Program This year-round day program (9am-3pm, Monday-Friday) is Calgary's only specialized option for adults with complex needs. Participants engage in group therapy with Conductive Educators, focusing on muscle strengthening, stretching, and mobility outside wheelchairs. Afternoons emphasize social activities, community outings, alternative/augmentative communication (AAC) for non-verbal individuals, and fostering belonging through inclusive group fun. Child Programs Preschool, after-school, weekend, and summer camps serve ages 2-17 with structured sessions in lying, sitting, and standing positions to target full development. Programs integrate toilet training, self-care skills, and personalized goals, supported by high staff ratios originally for cerebral palsy but adaptable to other neuromotor diagnoses. Fun elements like group games, meals, conversations, and music promote social bonds; many children participate long-term from toddlerhood through youth.
Eligibility: Toddlers, children and young adults with moderate to severe neuromotor conditions, such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, developmental delays or traumatic brain injury, that impair daily functional skills would benefit most from attending a FACE program.

Additional Info: FACE fills a crucial gap in Calgary's special needs community by providing specialized support for individuals with moderate to severe neuromotor conditions. While Calgary offers various programs for people with disabilities, FACE's unique approach using Conductive Education sets it apart. This holistic method combines physical rehabilitation with cognitive learning, empowering participants to achieve greater independence and functional skills. Many existing programs cannot adequately meet the enhanced needs of individuals with complex neuromotor conditions, especially those with degenerative disorders. FACE's programs, with our strong emphasis on physical therapy and individualized attention, are invaluable for maintaining and improving participants' abilities, quality of life, and long-term well-being. By offering tailored support from preschool through adulthood, FACE ensures continuous care and development for a vulnerable population often underserved by traditional programs.

The Calgary Sledge Hockey Association (CSHA) is committed to fostering inclusion, resilience, and community through the power of sport. We provide adaptive hockey programming for individuals of all ages and abilities, creating accessible opportunities for physical activity, skill development, and social connection. Our organization supports over 100 athletes each season and hosts the largest minor sledge hockey tournament in Western Canada, welcoming 30 teams and over 350 athletes from across North America. The barriers we address are both physical and systemic. Individuals with disabilities often face limited access to affordable recreation, inclusive environments, and opportunities to participate in organized sport. Many also experience social isolation, stigma, and financial challenges related to adaptive equipment and transportation. CSHA removes these barriers by subsidizing registration fees, supplying specialized equipment at no cost, and operating out of fully accessible facilities. Our "Try-It" events invite newcomers to experience the sport in a welcoming, low-pressure environment with coaching and peer support. Beyond physical wellbeing, our programs promote confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging. Athletes are encouraged to progress both on and off the ice, gaining life skills, building friendships, and contributing to a supportive and inclusive community. Through our work, CSHA aspires not just to grow the sport of sledge hockey—but to reshape what participation, possibility, and success can look like for athletes of all abilities.
