For five year old Archer, pain and discomfort during transportation has been replaced by freedom and independence.

Learn how support from Easter Seals Alberta, provided Archer and his family ease and joy with a new specialized wagon.

The youngest of twin siblings, Archer was born prematurely with a series of medical concerns. He was only 13 months old when diagnosed with epilepsy after suffering numerous seizures. He was later diagnosed with dystonia, a neurological disorder where muscle contractions occur involuntarily, resulting in painful twisting and repetitive movements. Archer also lives with a global development delay in reaching physical and mental milestones.

“I was in disbelief,” Archer’s mom Tara said of receiving the diagnosis. “I thought, he’s too young for this.”

The family obtained a specialized stroller, but as Archer grew older it became too small and painful. “His feet were on the ground and it was hurting him. I couldn’t strap him in for safety,” Tara explained. “It was hurting him and he was saying, ‘ouchie’ but I knew we couldn’t carry him.”

Due to his disability, Archer moves slowly, is unable to walk long distances and becomes tired and stiff. His neuromotor team, physiotherapist and mental health worker all suggested a specialized wagon as a new transportation support, however financial constraints were a barrier for the family.

“It’s hard with medical expenses, medications, plus just regular living expenses. It’s paycheque to paycheque and there’s nothing extra to put aside to save up for the cost of specialized equipment,” Tara shared.

With the support of Easter Seals Alberta’s equipment program, the family was able to get Archer the wagon he needed and enjoy a life changing moment.

“He has independence now because he can climb into the wagon himself which is also much easier on my back,” she explained. “He also has more freedom because there’s so many options. He can sit up or lie down and there’s also space to put a bag, which makes for less to carry when attending appointments or going for surgeries.”

With Archer’s new wagon the family was able to go on a trip to Yellowstone National Park without concern for his comfort and safety. “To go out and have fun as a family without Archer crying because it hurts was just amazing,” Tara said. “Life is so much better and easier with this one less stress to worry about. We’re so very grateful to have received this support from Easter Seals Alberta.”
