Meet Alex Mertens, the 2022 Easter Seals Alberta Ambassador

Alex Mertens first heard about Easter Seals Camp Horizon when she was 15 years old. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Alex relies on a wheelchair or walker for mobility.

Alex is a triplet, and her sisters have always supported her – so much so that they chose careers working with kids with special needs. One of her sisters even spent the summer working as a camp counsellor at Camp Horizon.

Alex describes herself as positive, determined and strong. She admires her grandma, someone she believes always looks at the bright side of things and inspires others to do their best. Alex says, “even though I am in a wheelchair, I can still do everything that other people do, just in my own unique way.”

Alex Mertens, 2022 Easter Seals Alberta Ambassador

When Alex is at Camp Horizon, she has the opportunity to embrace her inner daredevil. She looks forward to the high ropes course, giant swing and the zipline. Alex also loves meeting up with friends at camp and chatting with all the counsellors. After two years, she can’t wait to go back!

Alex lives by her motto, “I can do it!” which pushes her to accomplish all of her dreams. At 23 years old, Alex has started a successful home business and is attending a vocational program, aspiring to work in media. She is grateful for all the support she receives – from family, friends and our amazing Easter Seals community.
